Topics include the late Roman Empire and the "barbarian" invasions; the emergence of Christianity and Islam; the formation of the Carolingian, Byzantine, and Islamic empires; the Vikings and Mongols; castles, knights, and "feudalism"; medieval warfare and the crusades; religious thinkers, reformers, and heretics; the experience of women and Jews; the rise of cities and trade; the Black Death and the fall of Constantinople.
