Transfer Credit

History Transfer Credit Examiner for the current academic year is Professor Christopher Capozzola.
Requirements
- Students must receive a B- or better in the class;
- The class may not have been taken while the student was in high school;
- Credit will not be given for classes taken at a community college, junior college, extension school, or for advanced placement exams.
- The History Transfer Credit Examiner will evaluate the class to confirm that it is of the same caliber of an MIT subject and taught by a full-time faculty. The TCE has final say on the approval of transfer requests.
- History Concentrators can use only one non-MIT subject to fulfill their requirement.
- History Minors can use two non-MIT subjects to fulfill their requirement. Exceptions may be granted for minors and majors who study abroad.
- History Majors cannot have more than one third of their classes fulfilled by transfer credit.
- MIT students can cross-register for classes at Harvard University and Wellesley College, and therefore do not need to request transfer credit for those classes. Requests for Harvard and Wellesley classes to be counted toward the HASS requirement should be submitted to the HASS Education Office.
- Please note: After obtaining the approval of the TCE, all transfer credit for HASS classes must be submitted through the HASS Academic Administrator, Andrea Wirth, 4-240.
- Traditional transfer students (i.e., college students who started their studies elsewhere and transferred to MIT either in spring or fall) request credit through the form entitled
MIT Request for Additional Credit Based on Course(s) completed at Outside Institution. - Regular MIT students who have taken classes elsewhere under a variety of circumstances (summer school, study abroad, etc.) should use the Request for Additional Credit form.
- Additional transfer information
Students who contemplate applying for transfer credits are strongly urged to obtain preliminary approval from the TCE with the following:
- Name and description of class from course catalog;
- Name of the college/university where the class will be taken;
- Name, title, and professional status of the instructor;
- Course syllabus (and list of readings and major assignments if not on the syllabus).
After the class has been completed, the student must submit the following to the TCE for final approval:
- Transfer credit form;
- Name and description of class from course catalog;
- Name of the college/university where the class was taken;
- Name, title, and professional status of the instructor;
- Course syllabus (and list of readings and major assignments if not on the syllabus);
- Copies of all graded written work for the class (exams, papers, etc.);
- Transcript from non-MIT institution (an original, sealed transcript must be sent to the MIT Registrar’s Office).
