History of Work in the Modern US
Examines the history of work in the United States from the late-nineteenth century to the present, with an emphasis on the changing meaning and nature of work itself. Topics will include historical transformations in workplaces and working conditions; the role of government in shaping the economy and regulating employment; the relation of both paid and unpaid labor to the family and other institutions; changes to the composition of the workforce and the role of nationality, ethnicity, race, gender, and sexuality in shaping the experience of work; and labor movements and other collective efforts to transform working conditions and employment relations in the United States.
